Trade Buzz: Marlins’ Star Reliever Attracts Heavy Interest Ahead of Deadline

Miami Marlins relief pitcher Tanner Scott is having an impressive season, drawing significant interest from several teams as the trade deadline approaches. The Marlins, in the midst of a rebuilding phase signaled by the trade of All-Star second baseman Luis Arráez, may consider Scott as their next trade asset. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Philadelphia Phillies, Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, and Los Angeles Dodgers are all keen on acquiring the left-hander. Scott, who is in his third season with the Marlins and set to become a free agent after this season, has excelled as a reliever, recently achieving a 20-inning streak without allowing an earned run. If he maintains this level of performance, he is likely to join a postseason contender by the deadline.

Several Teams Eyeing Trade for Marlins Reliever Tanner Scott

Tanner Scott, 29, has been a standout in the Marlins’ bullpen since his acquisition in April 2022. Each season, his performance has improved. In 2022, Scott posted a 4.31 ERA and a 1.612 WHIP over 62 2/3 innings. The following year, he bettered these numbers with a 2.31 ERA and a 0.987 WHIP in 78 innings. This season, he boasts a 1.50 ERA, a 1.171 WHIP, and 38 strikeouts in 36 innings, along with 12 saves, matching his total from last season.

Potential Suitors

Jon Heyman reports that the Phillies, Yankees, Orioles, and Dodgers are all interested in Scott. These playoff-hopeful teams are looking to bolster their bullpens with his talent. The Phillies, with a bullpen ERA of 3.39 ranking fifth in the majors per FanGraphs, could solidify their roster by adding Scott. The Yankees, despite a challenging June, maintain playoff prospects with a bullpen ERA of 3.73, ranking 14th. Scott could enhance their bullpen’s stability. The Orioles and Dodgers also see Scott as a valuable addition to strengthen their playoff pushes.

Given the Marlins’ rebuilding efforts and Scott’s outstanding season, he appears to be a prime candidate for trade, following the departure of Arráez. His current form suggests he will be a valuable asset for a team aiming for a postseason run.
