Suns Secure Major Deal with Young Gun Following Rising Star Nomination

Will Graham has just experienced the most thrilling 48 hours of his young football career, securing a two-year contract extension on the same day he was nominated for the Telstra Rising Star award.

Graham played a crucial role in the Suns’ 11-point victory over Collingwood on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd. He collected 22 disposals and scored a goal just before halftime, showcasing his skills in a prominent midfield role.

This continues a stellar first season for Graham, who has now played nine games since his debut against Greater Western Sydney in the Gather Round. The new deal, reported by AFL.com.au’s Inside Trading last month, ensures Graham will remain at Carrara until at least the end of 2027.

Graduating from the club’s Academy last year, the 18-year-old was ecstatic about his double achievement. He viewed the Rising Star nomination as recognition for his hard work this season and saw the contract extension as a strong vote of confidence from the Suns.

“Knowing the club has full belief in me for the next few years and faith in what I’m going to become is so nice,” Graham told AFL.com.au.

The No.26 pick from last year’s draft initially trained at half-back during pre-season, but it soon became clear to coach Damien Hardwick that Graham’s true strengths were in winning contested balls. Against the Magpies, he contested 13 centre bounces, spending ample time alongside Noah Anderson, Sam Flanders, and Matt Rowell.

So trusted was Graham that co-captain Touk Miller participated in only 10 center bounces, often playing as a half-forward who moved into the middle to help create an advantage.

Graham’s rugged and combative style has clearly earned the support of his teammates. “Those players are special and have been so good for so long, and to know they’re putting belief and trust in me is awesome,” he said. “Touk and Noz (Anderson) have been really helpful with learning structures and running patterns. Rowelly has been good with the details, the craft. The whole midfield group has been so helpful.”

Graham is the Suns’ third nominee for the Telstra Rising Star award in 2024, joining Jake Rogers (round seven) and Bodhi Uwland (round 12).
