Triston Casas aimed for a July 2 return to action, but according to Alex Cora’s latest update, this seems unlikely.
Casas participated in a dry swinging session on Saturday and will do another on Sunday. The Red Sox manager praised Casas’s rehab progress but noted that he is still not ready for live batting practice. Less than two weeks ago, Casas set his internal target date for July 2. Given his current status, he won’t meet that goal.
“He obviously has general soreness. I think he’s going to do his stuff inside,” Cora said about Casas after Saturday’s session. “I’m not sure if he’s going to go on the field, but he feels that it went OK with the swings. It was up to 30 if I’m not mistaken. We’ll see where we’re at tomorrow. He’s swinging again tomorrow.”
Casas has been out for over two months due to a cartilage tear in his ribcage, suffered on April 20. Rib cartilage injuries can have varied recovery times due to limited blood flow to the area.
Casas’s next logical step in rehab is taking live batting practice. He mentioned earlier in the week that he’s taken “thousands of at-bats” in his head to stay sharp.
Cora also updated on another infielder, Vaughn Grissom, who’s been out since early June with a hamstring injury. Grissom hasn’t played much baseball in 2024 due to various setbacks.
“He didn’t have spring training. He had the rehab assignment. He got sick. He gets hurt here,” Cora said. “We have to make sure, first things first, that he’s stronger, and then after that we map it out.”
Grissom isn’t expected back soon, and he will likely play several games in Worcester before returning to Boston.
