Marloshawn Franklin Jr., a former defensive back for the Edmonton Elks, has joined the Rhein Fire of the European League of Football (ELF). The 27-year-old played eight games for the Elks in 2023, starting several times at safety. During his stint with the team, he recorded 28 defensive tackles and one interception. However, Franklin was released after this year’s training camp.
Before his time with the Elks, Franklin was a member of the Ottawa Redblacks in 2022 and the B.C. Lions in 2019, though he did not play in any regular season games for these teams. The Detroit native is now returning to Europe, having previously played for the Hamburg Sea Devils in 2021. In that season, which marked the ELF’s inaugural year, Franklin made 22 tackles, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles in six games.
The Rhein Fire, who are currently boasting a 4-1 record, are looking to defend their ELF championship title after an undefeated season in 2023. The team has a strong roster, including several former CFL players. Among them are safety Tony Anderson (formerly of Ottawa), receiver Kelvin McKnight Jr. (formerly of Winnipeg), linebackers Lino Schroeter (formerly of Calgary) and Emmanuel Falola (formerly of Toronto), and defensive linemen Aaron Donkor (formerly of Calgary) and Max Parkinson (formerly of Saskatchewan).
Franklin’s signing with the Rhein Fire adds to the team’s defensive strength. His experience in both the CFL and ELF brings valuable skills and knowledge to the team. With his proven track record, including his notable performance with the Hamburg Sea Devils, Franklin is expected to make a significant impact on the Rhein Fire’s defense.
The Rhein Fire are determined to continue their successful run in the ELF. Their current 4-1 standing is a testament to their strong performance this season. With the addition of experienced players like Franklin and other former CFL athletes, the team aims to secure another championship title.
The European League of Football continues to grow, attracting talent from leagues around the world, including the CFL. This influx of skilled players is enhancing the level of competition and excitement in the ELF, making it an increasingly popular league for both players and fans. As the Rhein Fire gear up for the remainder of the season, the contributions of players like Franklin will be crucial in their quest for back-to-back championships.
