Major Setback: Yankees to Be Without Key Designated Hitter

The New York Yankees will be without designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton for a significant period following a recent lower-body injury. After the Yankees’ 3-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves, Stanton stated he expects to be sidelined for about a month.

Stanton said, “It should be a four-week range, so as soon as possible, it should be close to that time frame” (via YES Network).

On Sunday, the Yankees placed Stanton on the 10-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain suffered in Saturday’s 8-3 win over the Braves. Stanton hurt himself while rounding third base in the fourth inning after a double by Gleyber Torres. Trent Grisham replaced him in the sixth inning, and an MRI was scheduled for Sunday.

Regarding his frustration, Stanton emphasized his focus on recovery. “My feelings don’t really matter at this time,” he said. “It’s going to be about four weeks, I gotta do what I can to get there.”

Stanton’s injury is a setback for both him and the Yankees. He was having a strong season, hitting .246/.302/.492 with 18 home runs and 45 RBIs in 69 games. This year’s performance was a significant improvement over his 2023 stats.

The Yankees do not have a clear replacement for Stanton. In the recent game, Aaron Judge served as the designated hitter while Grisham played center field. JD Davis, recently acquired from the Oakland Athletics, might temporarily fill the DH role. Davis has struggled this season, hitting .236/.304/.366 with four home runs and five RBIs.

Despite their recent loss, the Yankees remain first in the American League East with a 52-38 record, 1.5 games ahead of the Baltimore Orioles. They will face the New York Mets in a two-game series starting Tuesday.
