The Milwaukee Brewers made several roster changes before their series finale against the Los Angeles Angels. Infielder Tyler Black was recalled from Triple-A, while right-handed pitcher Bradley Blalock was brought up from Double-A. Infielder Oliver Dunn was optioned, and pitcher Elieser Hernandez was designated for assignment.
This marks the second stint with the Brewers for both Tyler Black and Bradley Blalock. Earlier this year, Black had 22 at-bats in the majors, with five hits and two stolen bases, while Blalock was promoted but did not appear in a game.
Manager Pat Murphy has not specified the exact plans for Black and Blalock. However, with the Brewers facing four consecutive right-handed starting pitchers against the San Diego Padres from Thursday to Monday, Black is likely to get playing time as either a designated hitter or first baseman. Blalock, who is replacing reliever Elieser Hernandez, may need a low-leverage situation to make his debut.
Upon being drafted in 2021, Tyler Black played various infield and outfield positions during the 2022 minor league season. In 2023, he started at third base before moving to first base. With current first baseman Rhys Hoskins on a short-term deal and Jake Bauers out of minor league options, the Brewers likely view Black as a key piece at first base. Bauers, who has been struggling, might be at risk of losing his spot if Black performs well.
