NFL fans had strong reactions on social media after Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow discussed his “football mortality” while rehabbing from another injury. Burrow is recovering from torn ligaments in his right (throwing) wrist.
Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow hinted at the possibility of an early retirement. Having endured numerous severe injuries since his college days, Burrow has missed considerable time with the Bengals. As previously mentioned on GH, Burrow acknowledged questioning the longevity of his career due to the accumulation of injuries:
“Whenever the injuries start to stack up, your football mortality kind of comes into the back of your mind,” Burrow stated following mandatory minicamp practice. “So that’s definitely something I’ve thought about and something I have had to fight through.”
Despite the challenges, Burrow expressed confidence in his ability to overcome injuries. However, he admitted it becomes tough when injuries accumulate, requiring him to take fewer practice reps than he prefers to maintain his peak performance.
Burrow also spoke about the mental strain of dealing with injuries:
“You always forget how hard it is coming back from injury — that’s every time it happens,” Burrow remarked. “There are always peaks where you feel great, and then a couple of months later, you might have days where you’re not feeling that great. In the past, I pushed through that and caused problems for myself, and this year I’m not doing that.”
NFL fans respond to Burrow’s remarks
While Burrow clarified he isn’t retiring this year and remains motivated to return as an elite quarterback, his candid mention of contemplating retirement elicited mixed reactions from fans. Some believe he won’t retire soon, while others can’t fathom the idea of him retiring early. Meanwhile, some fans speculate he might take his guaranteed money and retire early, similar to Andrew Luck.
