Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David, who has spent his entire 13-year career with Tampa Bay, was initially hesitant about staying with the team during a potential rebuilding phase. This uncertainty arose after Tom Brady’s retirement, leading David to consider retirement or exploring free agency following the 2023 season. However, the Buccaneers’ unexpected NFC South title win and their playoff run to the divisional round changed his perspective. Reflecting on his thoughts before the successful season, David admitted he had considered it might be his last year.
“Or I would’ve moved on, just to be honest with you. But I’m happy I made the decision I made,” David shared with Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.
Despite 2023 being the final year of his contract, David was confident about re-signing with the Buccaneers during the offseason, and the negotiation process was straightforward.
“Honestly, that didn’t take long,” David explained. “I definitely still love the game of football. I still want to play and I still feel like I’m playing at a high level. I still feel like I can compete with the best and obviously the organization felt the same way. It was a no-brainer for me to come back. Us being competitive also played a main part in it. I’m definitely looking forward to another great season.”
The Buccaneers have enjoyed significant success, winning the Super Bowl after the 2020 season and clinching the NFC South title three consecutive years from 2021 to 2023. David, accustomed to this winning culture, expressed his desire to remain with the team and continue their competitive streak.
