When the NBA Draft takes place on June 26th, the Phoenix Suns will have the ability to trade this year’s first-round pick as well as one in 2031. These picks have been off-limits due to restrictions that prevent trading first-rounders in back-to-back years and beyond seven years into the future.
Both picks could be valuable assets for the Suns. The 2031 pick could potentially be their most valuable asset, especially if they trade away key players like Devin Booker or Kevin Durant. Including either pick in a trade involving Jusuf Nurkić or Nassir Little would bolster the Suns’ return, making it the most practical way to acquire a significant upgrade this offseason. However, drafting and developing a young player could also add much-needed cost-controlled talent.
While the front office and ownership seem to have already decided to trade these picks, the Suns should consider some additional factors. General Manager James Jones has a reputation for preferring to trade draft picks rather than make selections, and Mat Ishbia seems to share that viewpoint. In a press conference last month, Ishbia stated that these picks would likely be traded.
While trading the 2031 pick might seem reasonable due to the aging roster, the Suns should also consider the constraints of the second apron. This limitation makes young, cheap talent even more valuable. Given the Suns’ inability to sign players to more than the minimum, drafting a talented player and keeping them on the roster could offer an opportunity to add fresh talent without another trade.
Additionally, the 22nd pick in the draft may have limited trade value. Depending on how the board shakes out, some teams might not be interested in the players available at that spot. If the Suns plan to draft a player with the intention to later trade them, the options become even more limited.
The 2031 pick holds more potential value as a trade asset, considering the Suns’ uncertain future with an aging Booker and a closed window for Durant. Teams may also view the Suns’ unstable long-term situation as an opportunity to get a better draft pick.
Ultimately, the Suns should consider trading this year’s pick while holding onto the 2031 pick until the trade deadline. By doing this, they could land a talented young player and secure an upgrade through a significant trade. However, they must also be strategic about making the right draft selection to maximize their benefits.
