As expected, Hendon Hooker experienced a mix of highs and lows during the Detroit Lions’ OTAs. Despite showcasing his raw talent, he faced issues with accuracy and often held onto the ball too long, resulting in “sacks.” However, it is anticipated that with more reps in training camp, he will become more comfortable.
Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press highlighted the fundamental work the Lions have been doing with Hooker this offseason.
On the changes to Lions QB Hendon Hooker’s footwork: “He comes from a different system at Tennessee in college where really he was almost standing still, almost like sitting in cement at times … where now it’s things are in rhythm and timing” https://t.co/URZ2FHcbWS via @freep

Hooker would need to perform poorly in camp or get injured to lose the No. 2 spot on the depth chart to Nate Sudfeld. While Sudfeld is valuable to the Lions’ quarterback room, the team would be in significant trouble if Jared Goff were injured and Sudfeld had to step in.
Certain key players are crucial for the Lions to avoid losing to injury this season, with Goff likely being the most critical. Hooker remains an unknown, and Sudfeld has limited regular-season experience.
If Hooker doesn’t firmly secure the backup role during training camp, the Lions might need to look for a backup quarterback elsewhere.
Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports examined several concerning backup quarterback situations around the league, including the Lions, and proposed trading for Taylor Heinicke.
“Hooker, a third-round pick, is still learning the No. 2 role and recovering from a torn ACL. Heinicke, with 28 starts in the last three years and a resilient playing style, could be an ideal fit for Dan Campbell’s mentality. His position with the Atlanta Falcons is uncertain after the addition of Kirk Cousins and Michael Penix Jr.”
Heinicke started four games for the Falcons last year and 24 games over the previous two seasons with Washington, leading four game-winning drives in 2021.
As a well-traveled backup quarterback with average stats, Heinicke is a potential trade asset for Atlanta. The Lions, unsure of Hooker’s capabilities and Sudfeld’s lack of playing time, might consider Heinicke a viable backup option for Goff if needed.
