The Jacob Markstrom saga has been a roller coaster, with the New Jersey Devils frequently linked to the Calgary Flames goaltender. Although the Devils nearly struck a deal for Markstrom before the trade deadline, speculation remains that Flames General Manager Craig Conroy might trade his top goaltender, particularly to the Devils. However, recent insights suggest Markstrom could stay in Calgary.
On the Jeff Marek Show, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman noted that while the Flames once considered trading Markstrom, they are now less inclined to do so. “I believe he wants to play for a team in a winning situation,” Friedman told Marek. “Calgary hasn’t given up on being that team. The Flames are open to trading Markstrom, but only for a deal that improves them.”
The Flames seek a “hockey trade” that might involve promoting Dustin Wolf as their future goaltender while keeping Markstrom to maintain a strong goalie tandem next season. If they trade the 34-year-old Markstrom, it will be a calculated decision.
Friedman added, “The asking price varies depending on the team. It’s not a one-size-fits-all scenario.” Before the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, the Flames were reportedly interested in Alexander Holtz from the Devils in a potential trade for Markstrom. It’s unclear if Holtz is still on their radar.
While the Devils are a prime candidate for acquiring Markstrom, they are not alone. Other teams are also interested. “I mentioned Toronto as a possibility, but the Zadorov/Tanev situation shows the challenges of trading between Calgary and Toronto,” Friedman said. “New Jersey, Los Angeles, and Ottawa are also in the mix. Calgary wants a deal that makes sense for them.”
If the Flames convince Markstrom they are contenders, he might stay. If not, and the relationship can’t be repaired, a trade seems likely, with the Devils as strong contenders for his services. If Markstrom stays, Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald will need to seek another No. 1 goaltender.
