Three Key Players Injured Following Day One of Giants’ Minicamp

The New York Giants began their mandatory minicamp on June 11, but injuries to several wide receivers marred the day.

“NY Giants with 3 WRs leaving practice at today’s minicamp,” reported Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com on X. “Darius Slayton shaken up after [a] collision with [a] DB; walked off with training staff. Chase Cota left on the cart favoring shoulder/collarbone after landing awkwardly on [a] deep ball. Bryce Ford-Wheaton getting right arm checked.”

The Athletic’s Dan Duggan confirmed “arm/shoulder injuries” for Cota and Ford-Wheaton and noted Slayton’s issue was harder to pinpoint, though he appeared to slip on a route and was slow to get up.

What The New York Giants Need: New QB, and Keeping Barkley

Cota, a 6-foot-4 bubble candidate signed in January, and Ford-Wheaton, a staff favorite likely competing for the practice squad, face uncertain futures. Slayton is the most notable of the trio.

These injuries add to the recent ankle injury sustained by Gunner Olszewski during OTAs, bringing the total to four wide receiver ailments this spring. Fortunately, the Giants have built a deep receiver unit for the 2024 season.

#### Daniel Jones and Wan’Dale Robinson Shine

Positive updates included quarterback Daniel Jones’ ongoing recovery from last year’s torn ACL.

“The knee feels good, really good,” Jones said on June 11. “Every week I’ve continued to feel better and better. Taking steps — doing a lot of the same things I’ve been doing but doing them better and feeling sharper and cleaner with a lot of my cuts and kind of working on getting that explosiveness back.”

Both head coach Brian Daboll and Jones are confident that Jones will be ready for training camp.

Meanwhile, wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson had the highlight play of the day, catching a short pass from backup quarterback Drew Lock and sprinting for a touchdown. Robinson is emerging as one of the Giants’ most exciting playmakers.

#### High Attendance and Other Highlights

Attendance was strong at minicamp. However, CB Aaron Robinson (knee), CB Tre Hawkins, WR Gunner Olszewski (foot/ankle), TE Jack Stoll, OL Evan Neal (ankle), WR Isaiah McKenzie, DL Timmy Horne (knee), OLB Benton Whitley (foot/ankle), ILB Micah McFadden, ILB Isaiah Simmons, CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver, and S Gervarrius Owens were on the sidelines or absent.

Rookie Nickelback Dru Phillips made an interception off a dropped pass from Tommy DeVito, and Coach Daboll continued running the offense, calling plays with a fast tempo.

The Giants also held four tryouts and one team visit on June 11.
