Insider Reveals Bears Still in the Trade Market, Looking to Secure Pass Rusher

The Chicago Bears have a strong roster as they head into training camp but are still on the lookout for a pass rusher, according to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler.

“The Bears are very happy with their current roster, but they are still in the market for an edge rusher. They recognize the need for one more player in that position,” Fowler mentioned during a May 31 appearance on NFL Live.

While the team is pleased with defensive linemen Montez Sweat and DeMarcus Walker, Fowler indicated that the Bears plan to take their time in finding the right addition.

“Free agency options are limited. There are players like Tyus Bowser, Emmanuel Ogbah, and Yannick Ngakoue, whom the Bears signed last year during early training camp. They are waiting to see if they can get a good deal on someone. They feel confident about the rest of their positions,” Fowler added.

Could Yannick Ngakoue be the Best Option for the Bears?
The Bears signed Ngakoue to a one-year, $10.5 million deal on August 4 of last year. He started 13 games before breaking his ankle in Week 14 against the Detroit Lions, recording 22 total tackles (6 for loss), 4.0 sacks, and 7 quarterback hits in those games.

Ngakoue, who turned 29 in March, might demand less than $10 million this season due to his injury. He expressed his desire to join a team before training camp in a recent interview with NFL.com.

“I just hope that I’m signed before training camp starts because it’s essential for having a successful season,” Ngakoue said on May 29. “Training camp is crucial preparation, much like a boxer needs to train before a fight.”

Re-signing with the Bears would be advantageous for Ngakoue, as he is already familiar with head coach Matt Eberflus’ defensive system. Given the scarcity of available pass rushers, a reunion seems likely.

Another option is the 30-year-old Emmanuel Ogbah, who was released by the Miami Dolphins this offseason due to salary cap constraints. Ogbah, who was owed $15 million in 2024, played 25% of Miami’s defensive snaps last season, finishing with 5.5 sacks, 9 QB hits, a forced fumble, and an interception. Adding Ogbah in a rotational role could allow the Bears to gradually develop rookie edge rusher Austin Booker.

Montez Sweat Excited About Rookie Pass Rusher Austin Booker
The Bears selected Booker in the fifth round this year, and his athleticism and strength suggest he could become a well-rounded player. Montez Sweat has expressed enthusiasm about Booker’s potential. “I’m excited about him. He has everything, from the frame to the pass rush skills. He’s going to be a great player,” Sweat said, adding:

“I’ve just got to be that big brother for him. Be there for him when he has questions and help him along the way, just like the vets helped me.”

With Sweat, Walker, Booker, and third-year defensive lineman Dominique Robinson expected to form Chicago’s pass rush this season, adding an experienced veteran like Ngakoue or Ogbah seems the most logical move. We will see who they decide to bring on board.
