Rockets to Part Ways with Key Point Guard

The Houston Rockets might be aiming to streamline their backcourt this offseason.

Kelly Iko of The Athletic recently discussed the Rockets’ upcoming summer plans. He suggested that guard Aaron Holiday is likely to leave the Rockets in free agency.

Holiday, 27, a former first-round draft pick from 2018, has been a valuable bench player. Serving as Houston’s primary backup point guard behind Fred VanVleet this season, he averaged 6.6 points and 1.8 assists per game. Known for his strong on-ball defense, Holiday is also a career 38.0 percent shooter from three-point range.

However, there are compelling reasons for the Rockets to let Holiday go, especially if another team is willing to pay for his 3-and-D skillset. With Jalen Green’s ball-handling abilities, the Rockets can stagger his minutes with VanVleet’s. Additionally, Amen Thompson is another capable ball-handler off the bench, and Houston holds the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft, where guard options like Reed Sheppard and Stephon Castle might be available. While the Rockets could take a different direction with that pick, all signs seem to indicate a potential split with Holiday.
