The atmosphere within the New York Mets organization is currently strained as the team has stumbled to a 26-35 record, largely due to several high-profile players underperforming. In response, the front office is continuously making adjustments to steer the team back on course.
Today, two anticipated roster changes were confirmed, with Mets fans hoping these moves will shed some dead weight and yield better results with the newly available roster spots.
Mets beat writer Anthony DiComo reported that the Mets have released catcher Omar Narvaez and reliever Jorge Lopez after both were designated for assignment last week, making them free agents.
Narvaez, in the second year of a 2-year, $15 million contract, followed a disappointing first year with an even worse performance this season, batting just .154/.191/.185 and creating a significant weakness in the lineup. Despite being an All-Star with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2021, his production plummeted after joining the Mets.
Lopez’s departure was more dramatic; he was designated for assignment immediately after being ejected from a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers last week. Following the ejection, he threw his glove into the stands and defended his actions in postgame interviews. Despite his solid 3.76 ERA this season, both players are expected to be picked up by other teams soon.
