Chris Martin was placed on the injured list by the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, not for a physical injury, but due to anxiety. Manager Alex Cora emphasized the importance of mental health in supporting Martin through this time.
Former Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon shared his thoughts on NESN’s pregame coverage before the game against the Atlanta Braves. He commended the Red Sox for their proactive approach to mental health.
“The Red Sox are at the forefront of addressing this issue,” Papelbon said. “Every player experiences it to some extent. Sometimes, players make sacrifices in their lives to cope. Alex Cora has addressed this, and Major League Baseball needs to collaborate and find a solution. This situation is different from a physical injury.”
Papelbon, a 12-year MLB veteran, highlighted the mental challenges players face and urged the league to take action in light of Martin’s situation with the Red Sox.
“I challenge Major League Baseball to do something about it,” he added.
