Mets’ Key Reliever Returns After Weeks on the Sidelines Due to Critical Injury

NEW YORK — Reliever Drew Smith was reactivated by the New York Mets on Sunday after a 15-day stint on the injured list due to right shoulder inflammation that had kept him out since April 23. During his minor league rehab assignment from May 8-31, Smith made five one-inning relief appearances, four with Triple-A Syracuse and one with Class A Brooklyn.

Smith, a 30-year-old right-hander, has a 1-0 record with a 2.70 ERA in 10 innings over 10 games for the Mets this season.

“We need to be cautious and ensure we don’t put him at risk,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. “We’re confident in his physical condition, but he’s an essential part of our bullpen, and we’ve missed him in recent weeks.”

Following Saturday’s 10-5 loss to Arizona, New York sent left-hander Josh Walker to Triple-A Syracuse.

Mendoza also mentioned that closer Edwin Díaz, placed on the IL on Wednesday with right shoulder impingement, has been playing catch.
