Giants to Cut Top WR Amid Salary Cap Decision

As the offseason continues, most teams have completed the major steps in building their rosters. The next key date to watch in the 2024 offseason is June 1.

In the NFL, June 1st is an important deadline for salary cap decisions. Before this date, releasing or trading a player results in the remaining bonus and future guarantees being applied to that season’s cap. However, if a player is designated for post-June 1st, the remaining money is spread over two seasons.

Giants WR Darius Slayton shockingly set to be active in Week 12 despite doubtful designation

CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin recently published a list of top candidates for cuts and trades after June 1st. One notable name on the list is New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton, who is seeking a new contract.

Benjamin writes:

“Skipping voluntary workouts in an apparent bid for a new contract, Slayton has quietly topped 700 receiving yards in four of five NFL seasons. But with first-round pick Malik Nabers onboard, he’s also expendable. Cutting or trading him would save the Giants anywhere from $3.8 million to $6.4 million.”

A fifth-round draft pick in 2019, Slayton has made the most of his time with the Giants.

The 6-foot-1, 194-pound receiver has accumulated 220 receptions, 3,324 receiving yards, and 19 touchdowns over his career.

Slayton has led the Giants in receiving yards in four of his first five seasons, each time surpassing 700 yards.
