On Thursday, it was announced that the Chicago Bears will be the featured team on HBO and NFL Films’ “Hard Knocks,” covering their training camp up to the start of the season. A major factor in this decision is likely their first-round pick, Caleb Williams, but former general manager Mike Tannebaum believes the Bears should have declined the opportunity.
Tannebaum shared his views on “The Dan Patrick Show,” expressing concern about the pressure on Williams to lead Chicago to the playoffs in his rookie season. He mentioned that if he were in charge, he would have opted out of “Hard Knocks” this year to avoid placing too much attention on the USC Trojan.
“The bottom line is, as the quarterback of the Chicago Bears, you’re incredibly significant, almost like Barack Obama,” Tannebaum said. “You’re the most important person in Illinois for the foreseeable future, and that takes time. Dan, look at yourself – you’re a Hall of Fame broadcaster and much better now than in the early years of your career. You need to put in the time, and if I were the Bears, I would have resisted and said, we don’t mind doing ‘Hard Knocks,’ but not this year. Let this kid grow and develop, make mistakes without the whole world watching.”
