It’s disappointing but not unexpected: Xander Bogaerts is headed to the IL with a fractured left shoulder. The Padres had been conducting additional imaging on the former All-Star infielder since he left Monday’s game, and Bogaerts was waiting for the results before commenting.
Xander Bogaerts has a fracture in his left shoulder. No indication of labrum tear or need for surgery. Bone has to heal. He intends to play again this season, perhaps by late summer.
He remains in Cincinnati with team and more tests are planned today. https://t.co/qdXGcRsRcx— Kevin Acee (@sdutKevinAcee) May 22, 2024
David Peralta, recently signed to a minor league deal, has played three games for Triple-A El Paso. With two extra infielders (Donovan Solano and Tyler Wade) already on the roster, San Diego opted to add Peralta as an extra outfielder/DH. Although Peralta isn’t the player he once was, his veteran left-handed bat is a better fit for the current roster than someone like Graham Pauley, who needs regular at-bats for his development rather than sitting on the bench in the majors.
Before his injury, Bogaerts had a six-game hitting streak and had improved his performance after switching to the same type of bat that Jake Cronenworth uses.
Since Bogaerts’ injury, Luis Arraez has been covering second base, and it’s expected that Solano and Wade will also see playing time depending on the DH and pitching matchups. In 47 games, Bogaerts is hitting .219 with a .581 OPS and 14 RBIs.
