After transitioning from Buck Showalter to manager Carlos Mendoza, the New York Mets have seen little change in their winning percentage, dropping slightly from 46% last year to 44% this year. Unlike the last offseason, the Mets did not make significant financial investments to pursue a World Series title, anticipating a challenging season.
Despite this, team president David Stearns signed six-time All-Star slugger J.D. Martinez to a one-year, $12 million contract after he remained unsigned for several months. Martinez has performed well this season, hitting .315/.359/.466/.825 with 2 home runs 9 RBIs, and a 141 OPS+. However, he is not expected to re-sign with the Mets next season and could be traded before the July 30 MLB trade deadline, depending on the team’s performance.
Additionally, MLB general managers, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, believe that both Martinez and Pete Alonso will be available for trade negotiations in the coming months. Although the Mets aim to be a playoff contender, GMs anticipate that first baseman Pete Alonso and designated hitter J.D. Martinez will be on the trading block. Alonso, a three-time All-Star known for his home run-hitting prowess, is also set to become a free agent after the season and is expected to attract significant interest as both a trade target and a free agent.
