Edmonton Elks Make Surprising Roster Cuts: Release Standout Stars

EDMONTON — The Edmonton Elks announced on Friday that they have released American wide receiver Arkell Smith and American quarterback Todd Centeio from their roster.

Smith joined the Elks in April after an impressive college career at the University of Central Missouri, spanning six seasons from 2018 to 2023. In his final year, he was honored with spots on the All-MIAA First Team and the Associated Press Division II All-America First Team. During that season, he amassed 1,425 receiving yards and scored 18 touchdowns across 13 games for the Mules. Standing six feet one inch tall, Smith also received All-MIAA Second Team accolades in 2022 and was an All-MIAA Honorable Mention in 2021.

Centeio signed with the Elks in January. He spent the 2022 season at James Madison University (JMU) in the Sun Belt Conference (FBS) as a graduate transfer. Originating from Florida, Centeio made a significant impact at JMU, earning titles of Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. He threw for 2,697 yards and 25 touchdowns, achieving a 169.0 passing efficiency, the second-best in the Sun Belt. Notably, he tied the Dukes’ record for most passing touchdowns in a single game, with six against Middle Tennessee on September 3.
