Toronto Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly, facing a suspension of at least nine games due to a lawsuit filed by a former strength and conditioning coach, has withdrawn from training camp.
In a statement via the Associated Press, Kelly expressed his intention to “learn, grow, and better myself” through counseling.
“I want to support the Argonauts as they prepare for the season and have decided to withdraw from training camp to minimize distractions for the team and work towards earning reinstatement in the CFL and everyone’s trust,” Kelly stated. “I look forward to getting back on the field soon.”
Kelly, who was the CFL’s equivalent of MVP in 2023 after leading the Argonauts to a 16-2 record, reflected on the CFL investigation’s findings released last week. “The findings were not consistent with who I am or the team and community leader I strive to be,” he said. “I want to be a leader who unites people, and I strongly believe that all workplaces should be safe and healthy for every team member.”
Throughout his football career, Kelly has faced multiple off-field issues, both in college and the NFL. Although he found a place in Canada, his future in the league is now uncertain.
