Gator Nation is probably familiar with Florida’s latest transfer target, Cormani McClain, who recently entered the transfer portal after spending a season at Colorado. McClain, a highly touted cornerback and a standout player in the 2023 class, currently ranks as the 21st overall transfer for 2024.
McClain’s connection with Florida dates back to his high school days. Despite initially committing to the Miami Hurricanes over Florida, McClain ultimately signed with Colorado under the coaching of Deion Sanders.
Standing at 6’2 and weighing 165 pounds, McClain has visited Gainesville multiple times during his high school recruitment, indicating mutual interest between him and the Florida program.
In his time at Colorado, McClain appeared in nine games as a true freshman, starting four of them. He tallied a total of 13 tackles, including one tackle for loss, and managed two pass breakups. However, his performance was not without flaws; his defensive grade ranked 36th on Colorado’s roster, and he had the highest missed tackle percentage among players with significant playing time.
McClain’s decision to transfer might stem from off-field issues that impacted his performance at Colorado. Coach Sanders emphasized the importance of preparation and commitment to the game, suggesting that McClain struggled in these areas.
In a departure interview with DNVR Buffs, Sanders expressed hope that McClain would find a program that could challenge and develop him both as a player and as a person. McClain himself stated that he seeks to join a program focused on player development rather than merely seeking attention.
Florida has extended an offer to McClain as a preferred walk-on for the 2024 season, meaning he wouldn’t count against the team’s scholarship limit. This presents a low-risk, high-reward opportunity for the Gators. Should McClain choose to transfer, he would bolster a cornerback unit that includes several promising players.
With three years of eligibility remaining, McClain has the potential to make a significant impact on Florida’s roster, provided he finds the right environment for growth and development.
