Manny Machado of the San Diego Padres sat out Monday’s game against the Chicago Cubs, allowing Donovan Solano to step in and contribute with two hits, a walk, an RBI, and a run in three at-bats. Machado’s absence was part of a strategic decision to provide him with additional rest as he gradually transitions back to playing third base. At the start of the season, Machado served as the designated hitter while recovering from surgery on his right elbow extensor tendon.
Padres manager Mike Shildt explained that although Machado has been actively participating in batting practice and games, the focus was on managing his workload on the field, considering his recent return and the physical demands of consecutive games. Machado, understanding the importance of pacing his recovery, expressed no objections to the decision, emphasizing that his rehabilitation is a collaborative effort between himself and the training staff, with adjustments made based on his daily progress and comfort level.
This marked Machado’s first intentional rest day of the season, distinct from the four games he missed earlier due to the birth of his child. He is set to return to the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Cubs, continuing his journey back to full strength.
