NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported on Tuesday that the New York Giants have acquired quarterback Nathan Rourke off waivers from the New England Patriots.
Given Daniel Jones’ rehabilitation from a torn ACL, which will likely sideline him from most on-field activities until at least the start of training camp, the Giants identified the need to bolster their quarterback depth chart alongside Jones, Drew Lock, and Tommy DeVito. They have addressed this need by adding Rourke to their roster.
Rourke, who will turn 26 later this month, enjoyed success in the Canadian Football League (CFL), notably with the BC Lions in 2021 and 2022. In 2022, he recorded 3,349 passing yards with 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, setting a CFL record with a completion rate of 78.7% while starting nine games.
Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 210 pounds, Rourke’s talents attracted attention from numerous NFL teams after his standout 2022 CFL season, including the Giants, for whom he eventually worked out. He initially signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars but spent most of the 2023 season on their practice squad before being waived in December. He concluded the season on the Patriots’ practice squad.
Rourke’s arrival potentially adds competition for Tommy DeVito’s position as the Giants’ third-string quarterback.
