Breaking News: Mets Sign Acclaimed Infielder, Part Ways with Outfielder

The Mets have agreed to terms on a minor league contract with infielder Mike Brosseau, as indicated by the team’s transaction log on MLB.com. Additionally, they have released outfielder Taylor Kohlwey from their Triple-A affiliate, according to the MiLB transaction log.

Brosseau, aged 30, is no stranger to Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns, having previously played under him during his tenure with the Brewers from 2022 to 2023. The former Brewers and Rays infielder boasts a career batting line of .242/.313/.438 with 26 home runs, 28 doubles, a triple, and seven stolen bases (in seven attempts) across five seasons in the majors, spanning 647 plate appearances.

Brosseau has demonstrated solid performance throughout his career, particularly highlighted by his standout 2020 season where he slashed .302/.378/.558 in 98 plate appearances. While his production dipped slightly in 2019 and 2022, since his exceptional 2020 campaign, he has recorded a more modest .217/.295/.385 line overall.

With a batting stance favoring right-handed pitching, Brosseau exhibits notable differences in performance against left-handed and right-handed pitchers. He maintains a career batting line of .265/.326/.464 against southpaws (117 wRC+), whereas he holds a less impressive .209/.293/.374 line against righties (87 wRC+). However, Brosseau has struggled with contact, striking out in 29.5% of his career plate appearances.

Despite his relatively brief stint in the majors, Brosseau has showcased versatility on the field, appearing across all four infield positions, both outfield corners, and even pitching in 9 2/3 innings of mop-up duty. Primarily stationed at third base, he has received negative ratings in Defensive Runs Saved (-5) and Outs Above Average (-8), while garnering positive reviews at second base.

Meanwhile, Kohlwey, aged 29, joined the Mets on a minor league deal in December. Despite a strong track record in Triple-A with a .296/.387/.444 slash line over four seasons, he has struggled at the plate this season with a .088/.162/.118 line in 37 plate appearances. Kohlwey, a former 21st-rounder, made his MLB debut with the Padres last year, recording two singles in 13 at-bats. He brings versatility to the outfield and first base, serving as an option for teams in need of left-handed-hitting outfield depth.
