Anticipation surrounded Michigan’s defense as spring ball approached. Rod Moore’s return and the presence of Makari Paige fueled excitement. Despite some safety depth concerns, Quinten Johnson’s decision to play for the Wolverines instead of entering the draft initially boosted morale.
However, Moore’s ACL tear early in spring practice dealt a significant blow to an already thin position, compounded by Keon Sabb’s departure to Alabama via the transfer portal. With Moore and Sabb both ranked among the top 10 safeties by PFF for the hypothetical 2024 NFL Draft, the outlook dimmed.

Yet, there’s a silver lining for those fretting over the safety situation. Johnson and Paige outperformed Moore last year per PFF rankings. While Moore’s leadership and intelligence will be missed, Michigan’s secondary is in capable hands with Johnson and Paige.
Johnson’s knack for game-changing plays offsets the absence of Sabb and Moore. His progression since joining Michigan in 2019 has been evident, highlighted by clutch moments like his interception against Bowling Green. Expectations are high for Johnson’s impact in 2024, especially after standout performances like his crucial hit in the Rose Bowl.

Paige, too, promises success against formidable opponents like Texas, USC, Oregon, and Ohio State. Despite a slight dip in numbers post-2023 season, Paige remains a defensive force. His resilience and experience, including 20 starts and over 40 appearances, position him as a potential leader. Paige’s captaincy in Michigan’s spring game hints at his readiness to fill the leadership void left by Moore.
Though uncertainties linger, Johnson and Paige offer stability and promise for Michigan’s defense in the upcoming season.
