Only one member of the New York Yankees currently leads all MLB players in a key statistical category this season: closer Clay Holmes. He shares the top spot for saves with the San Diego Padres’ Robert Suarez, both having accumulated nine saves each.
Holmes has been exceptionally effective this season, converting saves in nearly all of his opportunities and maintaining a flawless record of no earned runs surrendered while striking out 12 batters across 12 innings pitched so far. In what marks his seventh season in the majors, he appears to be in peak form, prompting speculation about a potential contract extension. Tim Britton of The Athletic projected that Holmes could command a four-year, $52 million extension from the Yankees, but Bob Klapsich, an MLB columnist for the Newark Star-Ledger, dismissed this possibility, citing the Yankees’ policy against early extensions for players.
Klapsich emphasized that it’s unlikely Holmes will receive an extension before the end of the season, as the Yankees generally refrain from such negotiations. Despite Holmes’ stellar performance, the lack of contract talks hints at a potential departure from the team once the season concludes.
Sara Melnick, writing for Pinstripes Nation, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding Holmes’ future with the Yankees. Although his contributions to the team have been significant, the absence of contract discussions suggests a possible parting of ways in the offseason.
Klapsich referenced Yankees’ principal owner Hal Steinbrenner’s stance against contract extensions, emphasizing that this policy applies to all players regardless of their stature within the organization. While the Yankees did extend closer Aroldis Chapman in 2020, there may be hesitation to repeat this decision, especially considering Chapman’s declining performance.
Looking ahead, Klapsich speculated that the Yankees might consider a short-term deal for Holmes, contingent upon his ability to sustain his current level of play. However, he noted that Holmes’ age could be a factor in negotiations.
Holmes himself remains focused on performing at a high level and helping the Yankees win games. In comments to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, he expressed his enjoyment of his current situation with the team and emphasized his commitment to contributing to their success, while acknowledging that his future with the organization remains uncertain.
