Four of the Cleveland Guardians’ top 30 prospects, as listed by MLB Pipeline, were drafted in the 2023 MLB Draft: Catcher/First Baseman Ralphy Velazquez (ranked fourth), Left-Handed Pitcher Alex Clemmey (eighth), Infielder Alex Mooney (20th), and Right-Handed Pitcher Andrew Walters (25th).
However, this season has seen another standout from the 2023 draft class making waves in the Guardians’ farm system. Left-handed pitcher Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson, selected in the 10th round, delivered an exceptional performance for the Single-A Lynchburg Hillcats. The hefty 270-pound southpaw pitched six no-hit innings, striking out 15 batters and only allowing one baserunner via a walk.
MLB.com’s Jesús Cano reported that Wilkinson joined an elite group of Minor League pitchers by striking out at least 15 batters without conceding a hit, a feat achieved by only five pitchers since 2005. Additionally, he shares company with MLB legends such as Warren Spahn, Don Wilson, Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer, and Nolan Ryan (who achieved this three times).
In his first four Single-A starts, Wilkinson has put up remarkable numbers akin to those seen in video games. He boasts a 2-0 record, leading all Single-A qualified pitchers in strikeouts (41) and innings pitched (20.2, tied) while ranking second in opposing batting average (.091) and WHIP (0.58). Furthermore, he holds the sixth spot with an impressive 0.44 ERA.
Following his outstanding performance, the former Central Arizona College Vaquero expressed gratitude for the opportunity provided by the Cleveland organization, emphasizing that this is just the beginning of his professional journey. Despite his modesty, “Tugboat” Wilkinson’s remarkable achievements are capturing attention across the baseball landscape.
