GM Ryan Poles Reveals How the Bears Identify Elite Prospects in the NFL Draft

The Bears have devised a method, complete with a distinctive symbol, to pinpoint their standout prospects in the draft. Whenever a player displays all the desired attributes, regardless of whether they’re graded as first-round picks or seventh-rounders, the team affixes a small Bears head icon to their tag.

Referred to as “the Grizzly” by GM Ryan Poles, this designation signifies the cream of the crop, the top-tier prospects. In the intricate process of talent assessment, particularly in the upper echelons of the draft, assembling a ranked big board can be a daunting task. With numerous players boasting exceptional skill sets across various positions, making decisions often boil down to fine distinctions. However, by applying the “Grizzly” label, the team streamlines their decision-making process. If two players exhibit outstanding tape and occupy premium positions, the one identified as a “Grizzly” takes precedence over the other.

Poles elaborated on the criteria for earning this prestigious designation, emphasizing qualities such as passion for the game, coachability, dependability, and resilience.

The team’s objective is to select a Grizzly whenever possible, particularly with high-value picks. Hence, the tag could heavily influence their decision with the No. 9 overall pick. If there’s one remaining Grizzly with a first-round grade when they’re on the clock, they’re likely to stay put and draft him. However, if all the Grizzlies are off the board, they might contemplate trading back a few spots to accumulate additional draft assets and secure a couple of Day Two Grizzlies.

A conversation with a Hall of Famer, known to assistant GM Ian Cunningham, reinforced the significance of first-round selections, likening them to the cover of an album—a representation of what the team aspires to embody.

As the NFL draft’s first round kicks off on Apr. 25 at 7 p.m., the Bears are widely expected to select Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick. However, their decision at No. 9, and the availability of Grizzlies at that spot, remains shrouded in mystery.
