The NFL is currently investigating the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons for potential tampering with Kirk Cousins and Saquon Barkley, respectively, before free agency officially began. According to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Sunday, a decision on the disciplinary action for both teams may be announced this week, with sources suggesting that the Falcons could face a more severe punishment.
Should the NFL impose tampering penalties ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft, it could impact the Chicago Bears significantly, as they hold two first-round picks, one of which falls just after the Falcons’ pick at No. 8.
In past instances, the NFL has penalized teams for tampering, such as the Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins. For instance, in 2015, the Chiefs lost draft picks for tampering with Jeremy Maclin, while the Dolphins faced penalties for tampering with Tom Brady and Sean Payton.
Given the seriousness of the Dolphins’ tampering, the league may be inclined to issue a strong penalty against the Falcons, potentially moving them down in the draft order. This could benefit the Bears by allowing them to move up and secure a top-tier receiver or left tackle.
With several quarterbacks expected to be drafted early, the Bears may need to rely on other teams selecting defensive players to ensure they have a shot at their preferred prospects.
If the NFL does penalize the Falcons by moving them back in the draft, the Bears could have a smoother first round, potentially securing a top quarterback and one of the top receivers or a standout left tackle without much stress.
