Star Brisbane forward Charlie Cameron is set to appear before the AFL Tribunal in a bid to overturn his one-game suspension and make himself available for Saturday’s highly anticipated match against Geelong. The suspension was handed down by the Match Review Officer following Cameron’s dangerous tackle on former teammate Jake Lever during the Lions’ victory over Melbourne at the MCG last Thursday.
The tackle, in which Cameron lifted Lever off the ground and drove him into the turf, was assessed by MRO Michael Christian as careless conduct with medium impact and high contact. As it stands, Cameron will miss the upcoming clash with Geelong at the Gabba.
Discussing the incident, Herald Sun journalist Jon Ralph noted that having one arm free might work in Cameron’s favor, suggesting that Lever’s free arm could play a role in the case. Ralph also highlighted the AFL’s aversion to the ‘lift and dump’ action, indicating the potential difficulty Cameron faces in contesting the suspension.
Adding to the conversation, AP journalist Oliver Caffrey expressed the need for clarity from the MRO, citing recent decisions involving Toby Greene and Nick Vlastuin in addition to Cameron’s suspension as contributing to confusion within the league.
Some clarity from the MRO is definitely needed. In less than 7 days, he's brushed over the Toby Greene tackle with no explanation, fined Nick Vlastuin, now suspended Charlie Cameron. Dog's breakfast at the moment
