Chiefs Trade Proposal with Detroit Lions: Swapping Two Picks for Future Key Player

The Kansas City Chiefs have a multitude of options to consider on the first day of the 2024 NFL Draft. For instance, there’s a proposal by PFF’s Brad Spielberger suggesting that the reigning Super Bowl champions trade up to secure a promising left tackle for their future needs.

Spielberger suggests a trade where the Chiefs would exchange their 32nd and 95th picks with the Detroit Lions for the Lions’ 28th and 164th picks. This maneuver would enable Kansas City to select BYU’s offensive tackle Kingsley Suamataia with the 28th overall pick.

Spielberger noted that the Chiefs, sitting at the 32nd spot, are in familiar territory, with the teams they defeated in the last two Super Bowls—Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers—also eyeing improvements at tackle. Additionally, the Chiefs acquired extra picks in a trade with the Titans, giving them flexibility to maneuver.

Suamataia, with his impressive pass-blocking grade and potential, could be a valuable asset for the Chiefs, though he might require some development before becoming a starter. However, given the Chiefs’ win-now mentality, it’s questionable if Suamataia, projected as a developmental prospect, fits their immediate needs.

PFF’s scouting department also expressed concerns about Suamataia’s readiness to start immediately in the NFL. Hence, the Chiefs might be better off selecting a player in the first round who can make an immediate impact, such as a wide receiver, cornerback, or another offensive tackle, depending on their draft board.

The 2024 NFL Draft is scheduled from April 25 to April 27 in Detroit, Michigan, and will be broadcast on ESPN, ABC, and NFL Network. The Chiefs possess seven picks in this year’s draft, including the 32nd overall pick in the first round.
