The Philadelphia Eagles have signed veteran tight end C.J. Uzomah to a one-year contract, according to a source familiar with the deal, as reported by NBC Sports Philadelphia. This move was initially reported by NFL Network.
Uzomah, 31, who was drafted in the fifth round from Auburn in 2015, has amassed nine seasons in the NFL. He spent the first seven years with the Bengals before joining the New York Jets for the last two seasons, before being released in March.
During his time with the Jets, Uzomah played under a three-year, $24 million contract signed in 2022. Despite not meeting expectations in terms of productivity, being overtaken by Tyler Conklin and Jeremy Ruckert on the depth chart, Uzomah was noted for his solid run-blocking, ranking fourth among tight ends in the NFL last season, per ProFootballFocus. However, his season was cut short due to an MCL injury in December.
Uzomah’s most notable receiving performance came in 2021 with the Bengals, where he recorded 49 receptions for 493 yards and five touchdowns, leading to his previous contract with the team.
The Eagles faced a gap at the tight end position after losing Jack Stoll to the Giants in free agency. Uzomah’s signing addresses this need, providing depth behind starter Dallas Goedert. Despite Uzomah’s potential as a receiving threat compared to Stoll, his roster spot is not guaranteed, and he will need to compete for it alongside other tight ends on the Eagles’ roster, including Grant Calcaterra, Albert Okwuegbunam, Noah Togiai, and E.J. Jenkins.
