Greg Marshall is returning to the city where he left a lasting mark as a football player. According to a CFL source, Marshall will be officially appointed as the Ottawa Redblacks’ defensive line coach on Wednesday. Drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the seventh round of the 1978 NFL Draft out of Oregon State, Marshall, a defensive lineman, spent his entire nine-year CFL career in Ottawa from 1980 to 1988, earning recognition as the league’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 1983.
Last year, Marshall was honored by being added to the Wall of Honour at TD Place. Marshall’s single-season sack record of 16.5 in 16 games was surpassed two years ago by Redblacks defensive end Lorenzo Mauldin, who recorded 17 sacks in 18 games.
Now aged 67, Marshall transitioned into coaching after his playing career, serving as head coach for two Ottawa teams, the Sooners and Bootleggers. He then held various CFL coaching positions with Saskatchewan (where he was the Roughriders’ head coach for half of the 2011 season), Edmonton, Ottawa (as the defensive line coach/defensive coordinator of the Renegades in 2005), Winnipeg, and Hamilton. Following his tenure as the defensive coordinator at Queen’s University from 2014 to 2017, Marshall was appointed as the head coach of the University of Toronto football team in 2018. However, he and the Blues parted ways in November.
The rest of the coaching staff for the Redblacks under head coach Bob Dyce includes Barron Miles as the defensive coordinator, Tommy Condell as the offensive coordinator, Deion Melvin handling linebackers, Alex Suber working with defensive backs, Travis Moore as receivers and pass game coordinator, Nate Taylor overseeing running backs, Nadia Doucoure as coaches’ assistant, Pat Perles coaching the offensive line, and Cory McDiarmid managing special teams.
In terms of roster changes, the Redblacks announced several transactions on Tuesday. They signed receivers Dillon Stoner from Oklahoma State and Garett Maag from North Dakota, defensive linemen Carson Taylor from Northern Arizona and Curtis Weaver from Boise State, linebacker Davion Taylor from Colorado, and defensive backs Jaquan Amos from Ball State and Elijah Blades from Buffalo. Meanwhile, they released receivers Floyd Allen and Lonnie Moore, defensive lineman Malcolm Lee, and defensive back David Haney.
