The Chicago Bears are left with only four picks in the upcoming 2024 NFL draft, but there’s a possibility of acquiring an additional one by exploring the trade market for Khalil Herbert, their dual-threat running back.
Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report suggested that the Dallas Cowboys reach out to the Bears regarding Herbert’s availability. The Cowboys, in search of a new starter for their backfield after losing Tony Pollard to free agency, have limited options with Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn as their top remaining backs.
On the contrary, the Bears secured D’Andre Swift as their new lead back with a significant contract, indicating Herbert might become expendable in the final year of his deal. Despite Herbert’s decent performance over the seasons, the arrival of Swift and the emergence of Roschon Johnson could make him surplus to requirements in the Bears’ offensive scheme under new coordinator Shane Waldron.
While Herbert could fit well into the Bears’ plans as a dynamic No. 2 option alongside Swift, the Bears may consider a trade if they believe Johnson is ready for the role. A potential trade with the Cowboys could benefit both teams, with the Bears potentially receiving a pick before Herbert’s contract expires, and Herbert getting a fresh opportunity to earn a starting job with a playoff-contending team like the Cowboys.
The key consideration for the Bears is the compensation they would receive in exchange for Herbert. While they might not be willing to part with him for less than a sixth-round pick, the Cowboys’ fifth-round pick (No. 174 overall) could be a potential deal-maker.
