Brisbane Broncos coach Kevin Walters has reportedly agreed to extend his contract for an additional two years, tying him to Red Hill until the culmination of the 2026 season.
The 56-year-old mentor has led the Broncos for the past three seasons, succeeding Anthony Seibold, who now coaches the Manly Sea Eagles. Under Walters’ guidance, the team has undergone a significant transformation, emerging as a strong contender for the title and coming close to securing their first NRL Premiership since 2006 last season.
While the club has not officially confirmed the extension, according to 9News reporter Ben Dobbin, Walters has secured a two-year renewal accompanied by a salary increase.
Prior to his role with the Broncos, Walters served as the head coach for the Queensland Maroons during the 2016 and 2017 State of Origin series following his retirement from professional play.
Hailing from Rockhampton, Walters boasts a distinguished career, having played 242 first-grade games and clinched four premierships.
Expressing his commitment to the Broncos, Walters stated in a previous media release upon signing the extension last year, “The Broncos are my passion, and to earn another two years as coach of this great club is an honor.”
Acknowledging the collective effort of the players and staff, he added, “It’s recognition that the entire club – all the players and the staff – are doing their job and playing their role in what we are trying to build together.”
Walters emphasized the ongoing dedication required for success, stating, “We have made a really encouraging start to the season but that’s exactly what it is – just the start of a long road ahead.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming match against the Raiders at Suncorp Stadium, he expressed anticipation, saying, “The next step down that road is against the Raiders at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night and we can’t wait to get back out there in front of our home crowd.”
