Since the onset of the 2024 free agency period, the Tiger-Cats have been consistently emphasizing the infusion of youth and bolstering their depth. This initiative has encompassed various aspects such as retaining and enhancing the offensive line, introducing several fresh receivers, and securing the re-signing of CFL All-Star wide receiver Tim White. The latest addition to their roster, as indicated by today’s CFL Transactions list, demonstrates their ongoing commitment to fortifying the running back position with youthful talent and depth, with the signing of American running back Greg Bell.
In the 2023 CFL season, running back James Butler delivered an impressive performance with the Tiger-Cats, amassing over 1000 rushing yards. Head Coach Scott Milanovich has prioritized supporting Butler for another stellar season in 2024 by bolstering the offensive line and augmenting the offensive arsenal. Bell’s potential inclusion in the roster, pending his performance during training camp, could alleviate some of the workload for Butler and provide the Tiger-Cats with added insurance in their running back corps to navigate through the rigors of the lengthy CFL regular season.
Hailing from Chula Vista, California, Greg Bell stands at 6 feet tall and weighs 200 pounds. Prior to joining Hamilton, Bell had stints with multiple NFL teams. In 2022, he played for the Detroit Lions, followed by a season with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2023.
Before embarking on his professional football career, Bell commenced his collegiate journey at Arizona Western Junior College in 2016. Over two seasons, he showcased his talents in 21 games, accumulating 2,404 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns on 382 carries, while also exhibiting versatility with two completed passes for 38 yards and two touchdowns, along with 16 receptions for 214 yards.
In 2018, Bell transferred to the University of Nebraska, where he appeared in six games, tallying 173 rushing yards on 35 carries and 14 receiving yards on four receptions. Subsequently, he moved to San Diego State University in 2019, where he continued to make an impact over 21 games, registering 1,735 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns on 360 carries, along with 119 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown on 15 receptions between 2019 and 2021.
