Canadian defensive lineman Michael Hoecht has inked a new deal with the Los Angeles Rams.
Initially, the team didn’t extend a qualifying offer to the Oakville, Ont. native. However, they later changed their stance, offering a right of first refusal tender. This allowed Hoecht to explore options with other NFL teams, but ultimately, he opted to return to the Rams for the 2024 season, with the contract valued at $2.985 million.
Standing at six-foot-four and weighing 300 pounds, Hoecht showcased his prowess during the 2023 season, starting in 17 regular-season games for Los Angeles. He boasted impressive stats, tallying 81 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, six sacks, two pass knockdowns, and one forced fumble. Known for his versatility, Hoecht can effectively contribute both as an outside linebacker and along the defensive line.
The 26-year-old initially joined the Rams as an undrafted free agent in 2020, spending his rookie season on the practice roster. Since then, he has appeared in 51 regular-season games over three seasons, making 26 starts and accumulating 124 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, two pass knockdowns, and two forced fumbles. Over his NFL career, he has earned approximately $2.58 million and secured one Super Bowl victory.
Despite relocating to Dayton, Ohio during his childhood, Hoecht returned to Canada with his family during his teenage years. He pursued his passion for football, playing in Ottawa during grade nine and in Toronto during grade ten. Although the Ottawa Redblacks hold his exclusive CFL rights, it seems unlikely that he will venture north of the border to play in the CFL.
