Eagles Owners Super Excited as Star CB Set to Return After Year-Long Suspension

Jeff Lurie expressed strong optimism that cornerback Isaiah Rodgers will soon receive clearance from the NFL to resume his career, following a year-long suspension for violating the league’s gambling policy.

Released by the Colts last summer immediately after the suspension, Rodgers was signed by the Eagles just before the start of the regular season, knowing he would be ineligible to play for the entirety of the 2023 season and restricted from entering the team facilities. He remained unpaid and did not impact the team’s salary cap.

Although the suspension’s duration was indefinite, league regulations allowed Rodgers to petition for reinstatement after the Super Bowl. While the exact timing of his petition remains unclear, Lurie expressed confidence during the NFL owners meetings in Orlando that Rodgers will soon be cleared.

“I’m very hopeful,” Lurie stated. “He’s a significant part of our future plans, and Howie’s acquisition of Isaiah was a strategic move. We’re highly optimistic that he’ll be fully reinstated very soon.”

In a February interview on ESPN’s Outside the Lines, Rodgers explained that the wagers he placed were on behalf of friends and family members who were unable to do so legally due to their residence. Admitting fault, he acknowledged that he was aware of the rules and the consequences of his actions.

Should Rodgers be reinstated, he could provide a substantial boost to the Eagles’ unsettled secondary. Following the season’s conclusion, the team released safety Kevin Byard and slot corner Avonte Maddox, opted not to renew contracts for slot corner Bradley Roby and starting safety Justin Evans, while also securing safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.

With uncertainty surrounding James Bradberry’s future after a disappointing 2023 season and Darius Slay’s age at 33, the Eagles are in need of defensive reinforcements, particularly considering their low ranking in pass defense last year.

Primarily utilized as an outside corner during his tenure with the Colts, Rodgers showcased versatility, with only a small fraction of his defensive snaps occurring in the slot according to Pro Football Focus. With promising rookies Kelee Ringo and Eli Ricks also in contention, the Eagles’ cornerback depth chart presents an intriguing mix of talent.

Rodgers, who celebrated his 26th birthday in January, demonstrated consistent performance during his three seasons with the Colts, contributing interceptions and fumble recoveries alongside notable coverage grades. His recent social media activity, featuring workout videos and highlights from his time with the Colts, indicates his eagerness to return to the field.

“Dang, I’m ready, man,” Rodgers posted recently, reflecting his readiness to resume his NFL career.
