Bears GM Ryan Poles has acknowledged the challenge of trading away former team quarterback Justin Fields, describing it as one of the toughest decisions he’s faced in his role as an NFL executive. Reflecting on the process, Poles recounted meeting with head coach Matt Eberflus to break the news to Fields about the trade to the Pittsburgh Steelers, highlighting the emotional difficulty of the conversation, particularly likening it to discussing the matter with his own son.
Receiving only a conditional sixth-round pick in exchange for Fields, a player drafted 11th overall three years ago, might seem underwhelming. However, with limited interest from other teams in acquiring the 25-year-old Fields, the Bears had few options unless they were prepared to retain him into the upcoming draft and possibly beyond.
Poles also noted the complexities surrounding Fields’ tenure in Chicago, citing the frequent changes the quarterback had to navigate during his three seasons at Soldier Field. He acknowledged a turbulent start to Fields’ rookie year and emphasized the importance of providing ample support and talent to nurture a young quarterback’s development within a competitive timeframe.
Fields’ departure has paved the way for Chicago to consider drafting a new quarterback, with USC’s Caleb Williams emerging as a potential top pick. Poles revealed that Williams is scheduled to visit Halas Hall in early April, following discussions with the quarterback’s father during Pro Day.
Additionally, Poles expressed admiration for Williams, highlighting the strong camaraderie and support he garners from his teammates, indicating a potentially promising future for the Bears’ quarterback position.
