Atlanta Braves Bring Back 26-Year-Old Right-Handed Pitcher on Huge Contract

The Atlanta Braves have recently made a minor league free agent signing, as confirmed by the team’s transactions log. They’ve added right-handed pitcher Tyree Thompson to their roster.

Thompson entered free agency on November 6 after last season and was picked up by the Braves on a minor league contract on March 17.

During the 2023 minor league season, the 26-year-old right-hander spent his time within the Atlanta Braves organization, primarily with Low-A Augusta. Across 18 appearances, including two starts, with the GreenJackets, Thompson recorded a 0-2 record with a 2.86 ERA and a 47:17 K/BB ratio over 44 innings pitched.

Additionally, Thompson made 10 relief appearances with High-A Rome, now known as the Rome Emperors, during the same season. He maintained a 3-0 record with a 4.43 ERA and a 31:15 K/BB ratio over 22.1 innings, also securing three saves with the Braves throughout the year.

Overall in the 2023 season, Thompson compiled a combined 3-2 record with a 3.39 ERA and a 78:32 K/BB ratio across 66.1 innings. His performance marked a significant rebound from the previous year, where he saw limited action with the Texas Rangers organization, posting a 1-0 record with a 7.13 ERA over 17.2 innings.

As a former 26th-round pick from the 2016 MLB Draft, Thompson has accumulated 383 innings pitched over his seven-year professional career, with the majority of his appearances being starts. Throughout his time in the minors, mainly with the Rangers organization, Thompson holds a career ERA of 3.97.

Thompson’s signing is likely aimed at providing depth within the minor league system. He may have the opportunity to advance to the Double-A level for the first time in his career during the 2024 season. Pitching depth is crucial for every team, and the Braves hope Thompson can seize the opportunity and contribute positively this year.
