Trimming the Roster: Pittsburgh Pirates Make Major Moves Ahead of Opening Day

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to streamline their spring training squad in preparation for opening day, with the latest roster adjustments announced following their victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.

Paul Skenes, the first overall pick in the 2023 draft, along with catcher Carter Bins, infielder Sergio Alcantara, and outfielders Matt Gorski and Joe Perez, have all been reassigned to the team’s minor league camp. Gorski notably hit a home run earlier in the day against Tampa.

Additionally, right-handed pitcher Kyle Nicolas has been assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis. These moves bring the total number of active players remaining in the big league camp to 45. Before the opening day on Thursday, March 28, the Pirates need to reduce this number to 40 and finalize their 26-man active roster.

Among the remaining players in the big league camp, right-handed pitcher Jared Jones, a notable non-roster invitee, sees his chances of making the opening-day roster increase with each passing day.
