The Chicago Cubs made significant moves during the offseason, with one particularly promising addition aimed at strengthening their bullpen.
In the 2023 MLB season, the Cubs bullpen struggled initially, leading to multiple losses for the team. To address this issue, the front office made a key signing, bringing veteran reliever Hector Neris on board with a one-year, $9 million deal. This contract reflects his status as a proven and reliable player, despite being 35 years old.
Although manager Craig Counsell has stated there won’t be set bullpen roles at the start of the 2024 MLB season, Neris is expected to receive numerous opportunities for saves.
Beyond his prowess on the mound, Neris has demonstrated remarkable generosity off the field. Recently, he treated 70 Latino minor leaguers to a meal at a local Dominican restaurant, covering the entire bill, as reported by USA Today. This gesture holds significance considering the documented financial struggles of minor league players, who often face low pay and long hours, particularly during spring training.
Neris’s leadership qualities and on-field performance make him a valuable addition to the Cubs’ clubhouse. In the 2023 MLB season, he boasted an impressive 1.71 ERA and a 1.054 WHIP while playing for the Houston Astros. Additionally, his track record includes 45 saves during his time with the Philadelphia Phillies from the 2019 to 2021 MLB seasons.
