Donovan Peoples-Jones is set to stay with the Detroit Lions for another year under a new contract worth a maximum of $2 million, as reported by NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
This extension follows closely after the Lions acquired Peoples-Jones from the Cleveland Browns earlier in the season, trading a 2025 sixth-round pick for the former Wolverine.
Despite modest statistics of just five receptions for 58 yards in his initial eight games with the Lions, Peoples-Jones proved valuable with crucial plays in critical moments. He also demonstrated versatility by filling in as a punt returner when Kalif Raymond was sidelined due to injury towards the end of the season.
Returning to Detroit presents an opportunity for Peoples-Jones to further synchronize with quarterback Jared Goff and potentially enhance his role within the Lions’ offensive scheme. His impressive performance in 2022 with the Browns, where he recorded 61 receptions for 839 yards and three touchdowns, underscores his potential as a significant receiving threat.
Looking ahead to the 2024 season, the Lions are poised to maintain continuity in their receiving unit, with Amon-Ra St. Brown nearing the end of his contract and Jameson Williams anticipated to assume a starting position. Additionally, a roster of returning players including Raymond, Antoine Green, Tom Kennedy, Maurice Alexander, Daurice Fountain, and Tre’Quan Smith further bolsters the team’s options.
The uncertain status of Josh Reynolds, currently an unrestricted free agent, remains a notable question mark for the Lions’ receiving corps in the upcoming season, with no updates as of the latest reports.
