Los Angeles Dodgers free agent and All-Star designated hitter J.D. Martinez is poised to secure a new team shortly. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Martinez has garnered interest from the New York Mets. Heyman reports, “The Mets are among teams talking to star free agent DH J.D. Martinez, and word is the interest is mutual, sources tell The Post.”
Martinez is coming off an outstanding 2023 season with the Dodgers, showcasing his prowess even at the age of 36. The six-time All-Star boasted a .271 batting average along with 33 home runs, 117 hits, 61 runs, and 103 RBIs in 432 at-bats. Despite receiving a one-year, $14 million contract offer from the San Francisco Giants, Martinez reportedly turned it down. As a three-time Silver Slugger, Martinez remains a formidable threat at the plate, known for his immense power. He seamlessly integrated into the Dodgers lineup and aims to maintain his high level of performance with his next team.
The Mets are in need of a consistent and elite designated hitter, having rotated the position throughout the 2023 season. Their designated hitters collectively posted a .220/.312/.403 slash line in 2023. If Martinez replicates even half of his 2023 performance, he could significantly bolster these statistics, potentially even surpassing them. Martinez’s addition would enhance an already potent Mets lineup on paper. With Martinez’s talent and track record, it’s only a matter of time before he secures a new contract, whether with the Mets or possibly the Los Angeles Angels.
