The Los Angeles Chargers have reached an agreement with running back Gus Edwards on a multi-year contract, announced today.
In the 2023 season, Edwards had a standout performance, achieving career highs in various categories including games played (17), starts (nine), rushing yards (810), rushing touchdowns (13), and rushing attempts (198). His 13 touchdown runs ranked third among NFL running backs and second among AFC running backs. Additionally, he recorded career-high numbers with 12 receptions for 180 yards (15.0 avg.).
Since entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent from Rutgers in 2018, Edwards has been a significant contributor to the Baltimore Ravens. He started seven of the 12 games he played for them, aiding the team to clinch the AFC North title three times in three seasons, with two instances of securing the No. 1 seed in the conference. Edwards started 26 out of 69 regular-season games for Baltimore, amassing 3,395 yards and 26 touchdowns on 699 attempts (4.9 avg.), maintaining an average of over four yards per carry throughout his career. He has also been involved in the passing game, recording 30 receptions for 374 yards (12.5 avg.). In seven postseason games, he made two starts and accumulated 250 yards from scrimmage (222 rushing, 28 receiving).
Before his NFL career, Edwards played three seasons at the University of Miami (2013-14, ’16), skipping the 2015 season due to injury, before finishing his collegiate career at Rutgers in 2017. During his lone season with the Scarlet Knights, he rushed for 713 yards and six touchdowns on 164 attempts (4.3 avg.), earning him a share of the team’s Most Valuable Player award, along with 13 catches for 103 yards (7.9 avg.) and a touchdown reception.
