The primary deficiency for Boston lies in its starting rotation, and the most straightforward remedy would involve securing the services of Jordan Montgomery, a former pitcher for the New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, and Texas Rangers.
Remarkably, Montgomery remains unsigned and has been linked with the Red Sox throughout the offseason. Despite this connection, Boston appears hesitant to commit to the financial requirements necessary to secure his services.
Nonetheless, there have been talks between Boston and Montgomery about a potential contract, as reported by Alex Speier of the Boston Globe.
“There are indications,” Speier stated, “that the Red Sox are engaged in discussions with starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery, who is still available in free agency, according to sources close to the situation.”
However, the recent signing of Bello suggests that the Red Sox may not be banking on adding Montgomery to their roster. The team has demonstrated a tendency to structure long-term deals with existing players in a manner that delays the financial impact until the subsequent season, enabling them to navigate financial constraints such as the luxury tax threshold.
Montgomery represents a logical fit for the Red Sox, offering much-needed stability to their starting rotation, particularly in light of Lucas Giolito’s potential absence for the entirety of the 2024 season.
Boston’s rotation requires bolstering, and Montgomery remains an available option for the team.
