Former Red Sox outfield prospect Marcus Wilson announced via social media on Sunday, revealing his decision to retire from professional baseball.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Wilson expressed gratitude towards certain individuals from the Red Sox organization, as well as coaches from the Diamondbacks and Mariners. He also thanked his mother, wife, and daughter before revealing his intention to pursue a career in mixed martial arts.
Wilson, who is 27 years old, was drafted by the Diamondbacks in 2014 but was later traded to the Red Sox in 2019. He showed promise in the minor leagues but faced challenges, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the 2020 season.
Despite solid performances in Triple-A and a brief stint in the majors with the Mariners, Wilson decided to retire after his contract with the Red Sox for the 2023 season ended prematurely.
Throughout his career, Wilson played in various minor league games, showing versatility by playing in different outfield positions. Despite his decision to retire, he leaves behind a notable career with accomplishments including being ranked as the No. 20 prospect in the Red Sox system in October 2019.
